I have to admit I like school, but it is great to know I picked a program that I think I will love and not just like. The first class was exciting for me because I really like the way the class is setup as a mix of in class meeting and online work. I also really like that Brent is trying something new to try and make it more a learning community and not a teacher based class. I want to do the same types of things in my classes.
Here are some notes from class:
Things to do
- Bio on eCollege
- Make a blog and link it on eCollege
- Read Rob Reiser- found on eCollege doc sharing
- Research for our first writing assignment
Things Stressed
- How we deal with information
- Stress of collaboration
- Topic of Gatekeeping was mentioned
I really feel that the way information is being exchanged and digested is changing at such an incredible pace that it is very important to be actively making sure you are up to speed.
In my opinion the way we educate in this country is going to go through dramatic changes in the near future. As I look out over my classes of 10th grade students I can’t help but feel it is time for me to adjust how communicate with them. The access they have to knowledge is nearly unlimited and the avenues of information they can choose from is staggering. If I am going to be able to compete for their attention I must be willing to offer more avenues then I currently do.
Ipods, myspace, youtube, cell phones, blogs, emails, posting boards, ebooks, websites, text messages, DVDs, television have all bombarded these kids since the day they have been on this earth (This year many will have been born in 1991-1992)
I am in this program because I want teach better. I want to be able to work with students in mediums that they fell comfortable with in order to make sure I help them receive the education they need for success in this quickly changing world. And you know what.. I want to make sure I am prepared too.
—Is it weird as I finished this I couldn’t help but think of Carrie in Sex and the City–?

I like what you said at the end – “I want to teach better.” That’s what drives many technology using educators – this desire to provide something better for students. It takes a lot of work, but the intent is to help students learn better.

I am not a technology major but I was thrown into the position for the last 4 years. I think that I did a fantastic job, but now I think my style is getting old and the students are familiar with the content. I usually give them the history of the computer and ask them to copy it for future testing. Could you help me with any other suggestions as to how I might start this school year off?
